Virtual Console 118 + WiiWare Update 45 (Arcade Edition)

Woah, big update this week. Why? Because now you can download arcade games to the Wii. And these aren’t ports of arcade games, these are practically the ROMs directly ripped and emulated.

This week there is only a single WiiWare game, and it’s from Nintendo. It’s called Bonsai Barber, described as a “First-Person-Groomer” game in which you groom vegtables. CONFUSED?

All the other titles are classic games. Super Punch-Out!! for Super NES is very noteworthy itself, but all the others are also recognizable names from the arcades. The Tower of Druaga, Gaplus (also known as Galaga 3 I believe), Mappy, and StarForce all hit the scene this week.

More details are inside as always!

Nintendo GDC Highlights 2009

Today was Iwata’s turn at GDC 2009 and there’s some happy details that have emerged. Infact, there’s one thing here which you can benefit from at this very moment, and that’s the first bullet here.

- Wii System Update 4.0 launches today and with it comes the storage solution we’ve been wanting for so long. You’ll be able to launch programs from the main menu. An SD card icon appears to access it. The Wii now support HC SD cards (up to 32 GB or 240 tiles, whichever comes first) as well. This update is available right now!

- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Dark Lord for WiiWare coming this year (nice title)

-Final Fantasy IV: The After Years also on the way

- A very odd title for Wii called Rock N’ Roll Climber which uses the balance board, remote, and nunchuk to climb cliffs. Then when you get to the top? Grab the guitar and ROCK OUT… What?

- New WarioWare for DSi! WarioWare Snapped! It’s a DSiWare download title.

- New category for the VC emulation library. The Wii will be adding arcade games under the platform “Virtual Console Arcade”. Mappy, Space Harrier, Ishtar, Space Invaders, and more on the way. Some titles are actually available right now. Gaplus, Mappy, Starforce, The Tower of Druaga available now for 500 points each. I’ll do an VC update on that for Monday.

and… *drum roll*

- A sequel to Phantom Hourglass. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks it’s being called. Pictures and a trailer will be available soon no doubt. That’s due to launch this year for the DS.

Not bad! Also, there’s a new Punch-Out!! trailer available on the Nintendo Channel. Looks good!

Virtual Console 117 + WiiWare Update 44

I’ll consider this week a classics week.

For WiiWare we’ve got a nice standard puzzle game from Hudson, Pop’Em Drop’Em SAMEGAME. (a little ironic name there). Then for the VC we’ve got Bomberman ‘94 for the TurboGrafx16 and DETANA TWIN BEE, also for the TG16. Classic style games all round then!

Virtual Console 116 + WiiWare Update 43

Sort of a neat week for the VC and Wiiware library. Another classic Commodore 64 game, Summer Games II, and Bit Trip Beat for Wiiware, a musical pong like game. Bit Trip Beat is probably my preferred choice here. Yeah I know Summer Games II is sort of a classic on the good ole C64 but I could never really get into it. BIT.TRIP BEAT is an 8-bit styled game in which you bounce happy little pixels back across the screen to the beat of supa-digital music. Personally that sounds awesome, and get this. It’s only 600 Wii Points, that’s a single dollar more than the C64 game.

Virtual Console 115 + WiiWare Update 42

It’s a small update this week, but you know what? That’s ok, because I prefer quality over quanity. Both titles this week for WiiWare and VC are more like what I’d like to see on the service. We’ve got a Gradius remake from Konami called Gradius ReBirth. Then on the VC we’ve got Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars for the Sega Master System. Not bad.

Virtual Console 114 + WiiWare Update 41

Oh my god! OH MY GOD! It’s Ogre Battle for SNES. This was a pretty freaking awesome game, it still is actually. I’m sort of amazed Square Enix decided to release this. Ogre Battle on Snes was mildly rare, but not nearly as rare as Orge Battle 64. They need to get that one out on VC, it was one of those titles that got overlooked. It holds up even better than the SNES one in some ways. Even graphically it looks nice. But for now it’s the SNES one, which is awesome. Not sure if new players will like it, but any old school players should remember it fondly. How’s that for a bit of commentary eh? All broken up into little sentences and stuff? Basically Ogre Battle is awesome.

Also there’s Family & Friends Party… for WiiWare. Blah! Whatever!
