Virtual Console 106 + WiiWare 33 Update

This is it. The last Virtual Console and WiiWare update of 2008. We’ve seen some awesome new and old games for both services this year. And while next year looks likes it’s going to be one of the best years for disk Wii software I’m sure the digitial downloads will be fine as well. Perhaps in 2009 we can get Earthbound… right? Well, I can dream.

This week the WiiWare service introduces Maboshi’s Arcade and Cue Sports - Pool Revolution. Perhaps more interestingly the VC gets Zoda’s Revenge: Star Tropics II.

Nintendo wants you to spend your New Year’s Eve downloading VC and WiiWare titles. But I’m sure a lot of you are going to do something much more meaningful like… uhhh… count backwards and watch a ball drop, or uhhh… watch your fireworks display in Animal Crossing… Me? I’m going to play some Dokapon Kingdom with friends. HELL YEAH.

Wolfenstein 3D VS Pariah

Hey all, and welcome once again to Versus. In the hopes that The Conduit (March 2009) will show people that the Wii can be a hardcore system, and in the spirit of the holidays, I’ll be examining First Person Shooters this time around. To be fair, there are tons of places we could start and end when talking about shooters. Shooters are today what platformers were in the 80s and early 90s, meaning there are a billion of them and they’re hard to tell apart. Never fear, I am here to show you the way.

Merry Christmas 2008

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas. May Santa bring you some fun new games.

Virtual Console 105 + WiiWare 32 Update

It’s COLD outside. Or at least it is where I live! -20F with the windchill, ~8F without! Right now that’s a pretty good arguement for digital distribution, I don’t have to go outside. Instead I can sit on my couch and get fat while pretending to be somewhere else. All for less than $10.

This week the WiiWare collection expands by two titles. Tiki Towers and Fun! Fun! Minigolf are the new members of the family. But let’s not forget about our elders and take some time out to reflect on Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis.

… man! I sure wish I had something to say about it! The fact is I’ve never really played any of the Phantasy Star games even though I’ve always heard that people like the series. Look down on me if you must, I don’t mind.

Excitebike VS Dirt

Remember the games that spawned so many copycats that it actually formed a new genre? Ever wonder how their modern successors stack up? Welcome to VS. I compare recent games to their original predecessor to see how new games hold up in terms of game play quality (because flashy graphics don’t make a game fun, kids!)

This time we pit the classic motocross game, Excitebike, against the newer rally cross game, Colin McRae’s DiRT. I know they’re not technically the same thing, but I figure they’re close enough. Let’s kick this off with some basic info to keep in mind. (Continue)

Virtual Console 104 + WiiWare 31 Update

Well it’s that time of the week again. No, not when you punch your little brother and call him a fag! That’s on Thursdays. Today is Monday, and that means it’s time for me to tell you about what Nintendo told me what the Virtual Console and WiiWare updates are. This week the WiiWare service receives two new games. Strong Bad Episode 5: 8-Bit Is Enough (freaking awesome title) and Big Kahuna Party (a popular symbol matching puzzle game).

The Virtual Console gets one lonely game. Enduro Racer for the Sega Master System. In the arcades Euduro Racer produced a startlingly effective 3D track with bumps and jumps. On the Master System the game now plays in a isometric view to acheive the 3D effect. Not a bad trait I mind you but I thought it nessisary to warn it’s not quite like the arcade version. It’s still a more than compedient racing title though and it’s got some catchy music.

More details inside!

But before you go! Check back with us tomorrow for what we hope will become a standard feature on the site where new writer Will examines and compares classic games to their modern relatives regardless of their technical abilities.

Virtual Console 103 + WiiWare 30 Update

It’s snowing! DAMN IT! There was a time when snow was awesome. That would be back when it would cancel school. But since I’m currently not in school it’s not as awesome. Oh well it’s not like I LEAVE THE HOUSE anyway!

This week the WiiWare additions are a puzzle game called Bruiser and Scratch and a game called Hockey Allstar Shootout in which you use the remote to shoot. Deep? Probably not, but they both seem to be fair priced.

For the Virtual Console this week we get the best reason to own a Genesis system. Sonic The Hedgehog 2… but what’s this!? This is the Sega Master System version. BITCHIN. I bet most people out there don’t recall the Master System.

Pretty cool update since they released the Master System version of Sonic 2. The Genesis version is already available.

Mario Kart Love Song

I usually don’t post this kind of stuff. Mainly because most the videos of people singing on Youtube are unintentional comedy. That’s not to say I can do better, but blinktwice4y can! The song is both clever and well done, and for that he deserves Super Star.

Virtual Console 102 + WiiWare 29 Update

Wow nice. The VC and WiiWare stuff has been doing pretty good for a while now.

This week the WiiWare service gets invaded by Space Invaders Get Even and Pit Crew Panic! The VC gets only one title, but it’s Metal Slug 2 which is a very fun arcade game. This is the NEOGEO version of Metal Slug 2 by the way, which if I remember correctly is the most accurate port from the arcade.

I actually mused about a Pit Crew game a while ago. Fun to see that someone else thought of the same thing. Is it good? No idea. But one thing’s for sure… HEAVY MACHINE GUN!
