During the afternoon on Monday a Wii firmware update hit. Among some other things it updates the Shop Channel so you’ll need to update if you want to download some VC games. There doesn’t seem to be too much to this update but I could missing something. Please feel free to list changes in the comments section and I’ll update the list here.
List of changes:
Shop Channel menu icon has been update (looks a lot better I think)
“Wii Gifting” feature added to Shop Channel (lets you buy VC/Wii Ware software for other people on your friend list)
Photo Channel 1.1 added to download list
Photo Channel changes:
You can now set pictures on the SD or System Memory as the Photo Channel icon on the Wii Menu.
MP3 playback has been replaced with with AAC file playback.
This means that if you use the Photo Channel to play MP3s you won’t be able to do it with 1.1. If you want the new feature(s) I recommend using BonkEnc to convert your music collection. (it’ll do batches of files and is free to use, however please note that you can donate to them)
It was previously thought that you couldn’t downgrade back to Photo Channel 1.0 but infact you can. To do so, go into the Channel data management screen and delete the channel. This will remove the update from the memory and the channel will return to its old version. To re-upgrade simply download the 1.1 version again. So if you want to check out the new stuff but don’t want to lose MP3 support have no worries. Please note that Wii consoles that come with Photo Channel 1.1 pre-installed at the factory will not have the ability to delete that version and downgrade to Photo Channel 1.0 (these consoles became available at retail in December, 2007).
Since Pokemon Snap released on Monday I thought they might add in the feature to move pictures on the Wii to SD card. That way you could print the pictures using a PC. I have not found any such feature, and that sucks! If anyone discovers it hidden away please post how here. I have screen shots I’d like to get on my PC without having to use the video capture device.
