GameCrazy To Close all Stores

Man this is terrible. Yesterday a rumor was going around that GameCrazy was shutting down, and today it’s confirmed by numerous places. I’ve mentioned GameCrazy on this site a couple times as good alternative to GameStop. I hear there’s sub-par GameCrazy locations, but every single I went to in Ohio was just fine. My local store in particular was especially excellent. Since GameCrazy is hooked into Hollywood video there were certain perks such as a free rental each month for a year if you bought a console. By the way, I hear Hollywood Video (a good alternative to Blockbuster), is also closing! DAMN IT.

With GameCrazy gone my options will be severely limited. I have a special hatred for GameStop and I stopped going there years ago due to awful experiences. All that’s left now are big box stores that don’t get a lot of the titles I like. I may just switch over to Amazon.com or something.

Local GameCrazy, you will be missed.

Check out this great video from CollegeHumor. This god exists and you know it.

Happy Holidays

It's recycled! Shhhh!

Happy Holidays from Bomb-Omb. What did you think of this year in terms of gaming? Personally, I consider 2009 an above-average year, it had some great highlights, but was a bit scattered. 2010 promises to be even better with Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid Other M, and maybe (just maybe) the Zelda game designed around the Motion Plus, just to name some big titles from Nintendo.

Ultra-Realistic Modern Warfare Game Features Awaiting Orders, Repairing Trucks

Excellent! Pre-orders at the ready!

DSi Mario Calculator Easter Egg

So when it came out I downloaded the Mario Calculator for DSi. I know, it’s just a calculator and it costs $2, but you know what? I did it anyway because the draw of crispy 8-bit visuals is just too much for me (it does unit conversions as well you know!). But anway, I was calculating the number of cats one would have to jump over in order to blow your mind when all of the sudden…

Really I should have thought of this earlier since it’s so similar to another sort of easter egg from the Super Mario Bros on the NES.

This also works for the Animal Crossing version of the calculator (with a different result). I’m asking a friend to take a video of that one.
The instructions on how to do this are inside if you can’t figure it out from the video.

Check out Michael Jackson’s Arcade!

Michael Jackson’s private arcade is pretty awesome, and you can take a virtual tour of it! It’s a nice mix of new and classics. I found Revolution X, but I can’t find Moonwalker! What gives!? But there’s some cool stuff in there like the Sega R360, neat statues, trinkets, home game system displays, and pinball machines.

Google Celebrates Tetris

Perhaps you noticed, perhaps not, but today Google replaced their logo with Tetriminoes (for the day).

The Punch-Out!! Website is Awesome

The new Punch-Out!! for Wii is coming down the line and will be available in just 10 days. Meanwhile you can check out the snazzy, and quite frankly awesome, website for the game. My god, is that coach telling me to join Club Nintendo? Win.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! has remained one of my favorite titles over the years, and I like that they’ve brought back a lot of the over the top, stereotypical characters (sans Mike Tyson of course). They even have Piston Honda! Although they’ve modified his name a little so it’s now Piston HondO. Von Kaiser from Germany, Glass Joe from France. Awesome.

I haven’t played the new Punch-Out!! yet of course, but it’s looking great (Hey Nintendo, send me a copy please). It’s a good sign when a Wii game has controls for both motion controls (including balance board if you have one) and NES-Style buttons.

Color me excited.

Are We Doing Enough to Prepare for the Apocalyptic World of Tommorrow?

Are Violent Video Games Adequately Preparing Children For The Apocalypse?

Here’s something that crosses my mind on occasion. Yeah practicing zombie horde fighting formations and ammo conservation skills are important to learn for the future. But is that enough? The Onion News network discusses this very issue in the video above.

What can we do as designers and gamers to improve our training for the inevitable world of tomorrow? I propose we start by introducing into our games more brutal and primitive weapons. Because how can we be sure that there’s going to be enough ammo after the bombs drop? However we can certainly be sure there’s going to be lots of twisted and radioactive metal laying around to make things like spears. Should we be introducing the idea of cannibalism into our digital worlds? I think we’d be foolish not to. What are your solutions to this very important problem?

Merry Christmas 2008

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas. May Santa bring you some fun new games.
