I’m not dead! (yet)

Hey guys! Fun fact: I’m not dead yet, and neither is the site. You’ve probably noticed an extreme lack of new posts around here. That’s because for the past two years I’ve been working on a project and more recently that project became more important to me. Because of this, a site like Bomb-Omb, where the information provided is usually extremely time sensitive, and where I’m basically the only contributor, is going to suffer. Game news moves very fast. One day Duke Nukem Forever is coming out, the next it’s not. Bomb-Omb still gets a decent amount of traffic, and after examining the hottest pages on the site for a few months I’ve decided to take the site in a new direction.

I can’t keep up with it all on my own, and I’ve never been able to find people to help take on some of the load. Consider that there’s literally thousands of game news resources available on the internet alone, it’s very hard to compete. Therefore, I’m going to be easing off on hard game news and switch to something a bit more unique. This will not only hopefully make Bomb-Omb a more unique place to visit, but also a much more enjoyable experience for me.

This perhaps means fewer posts than one per week, but the posts will be higher quality, and they won’t be just what games came out over the weekend. Starting next week I will occasionally be posting in-depth articles on a variety of topics related to our common passion, video games. Indeed, sometimes this means I’m still going to be posting news.

I’ll leave what’s coming up to your imagination. Until then, feel free to comment in the little boxes below. They are now open to anyone to post, though you must first go through my personal filter.

E3 2010

Wow. Nintendo really delivered with this show. I’ll have media up when I can get them.

The Zelda demo was cell shaded, but also essentially using the Twilight Princess model styles. The demo was having some issues on stage, so we’ll have to wait to see some show floor footage to get a better feel for it. The game uses motion plus for practically everything. The game is now called The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. A good way to describe the style is a 3D Link to the Past style.

Retro Studio showed a new 2.5D Donkey Kong Country game for Wii that looks fantastic.

Golden Sun DS was shown and it looks very much like GBA games, but with 3D.

Golden Eye for Wii was shown. A remake the N64 classic.

Much more Metroid: Other M footage was shown. It relieves a lot of my fears about the game. It’s certainly Metroid.

A new platforming Kirby game for Wii was announced and shown that looks very cool. All the characters are made out of dynamic yarn lines.

The 3DS was the big star of the show. There have been many hardware changes. A D-Pad and Analog stick now are on the left side. The analog stick seems to be a concave rubberized pad that slides. The 3D screen is a large widescreen on the top of the system. The bottom screen is the 4:3 DS style screen with a touch panel. A slider bar can control the 3D depth from all the way up down to completely off. The hardware has many improved wireless and OS features.

Kid Icarus for the 3DS was shown and it looks like a really interesting revival of the character. It’s certainly one to watch. The graphics capability of the 3DS is about on the level of a Wii game just judging by the Kid Icarus game.

There were a lot of 3rd party announcements for the 3DS that are really exciting. I will post a list when I have a more complete list post.
Thanks to GoNintendo for providing this list.

If someone has encoded the press conference for download I will provide that here. It’s a show worth watching. Nintendo really delivered this year.

New Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer

In edition to the awesome Metroid Trailer from yesterday Nintendo has released a new Mario Galaxy 2 trailer. Besides more shots of new worlds the trailer also demonstrates the new level over world that replaces the HUB design of the original.

Latest Metroid: Other M gameplay trailer explains how the hell you play it

I’m a big fan of the Metroid series. Super Metroid is quite possibly my favorite game of all time. Metroid: Other M has of course been on my radar since it was announced and there’s been two trailers for the “Team Ninja x Nintendo” game. There’s always been a little problem though. Every time I see it, I can’t figure out what type of game it’s supposed to be. Well today that mystery is resolved with the latest ‘gameplay’ trailer!

Mega Man 10 coming to WiiWare

If you enjoyed Mega Man 9 and it’s awesome box art like I did, then you’ll be excited about the totally rad announcement of Mega Man 10 and it’s box art! Mega Man 10 follows in 9’s footsteps, retaining that tried and true 8-bit NES style. So just right there I’m sold, but take a closer look at this art (higher res here). It’s got all those flaws the old box art did. Mega Man has an arm cannon (on the correct arm this time) but has some sort of laser gun. Proto Man looks like Shredder from TMNT, Sheep Man at the left, a robot dragon with tit guns, and Dr. Wiley’s castle mounted akwardly on some sort of space ship. Pure win.

Dear Capcom, make this box available for purchase! It doesn’t have to come in an NES cart like the Mega Man 9 press kit did. Just a DVD case inside the NES case would suffice. Pleeeeeeeease?

DSi-LL Announced - It’s for your mom!

Woah! That was fast. A new model of the DSi has been announced. Head on over to GoNintendo and the official site (Japanese) for more information!

This model is quite a bit larger than the DSi. YA THINK? The screens are both 4.2′’ and the stylus is more pen like. It also weighs 50% more and comes with some Brain Training games pre-installed.

This is actually pretty interesting because this model is clearly designed for your mother. Yes. YOUR MOTHER! Ok, maybe just people past 50. The pen is easier to hold, the screens are easier to see, and it isn’t nearly as portable as the DSi or DS Lite. My mother actually uses a DS Phat because she has a much easier time holding it. However those DS Phat screens are hard on the eyes, this is the perfect upgrade for her.

What’s that? You feel bad that you got a DSi just a couple months ago? Let me cheer you up. Consider that while the size of the screens has increased dramatically, the resolution of those screens has not. Also consider that you’re going to be hard pressed to slip this in your pocket. Now look at that lipstick colored shell. That’s why this isn’t designed for you, it’s for your mom! On a side note, this is not announced outside of Japan.

Flipnote Studio released in Europe and US… for free!

Flipnote Studio, also known as Moving Memopad, is a simple to use, but powerful animation program for the DSi. When I saw it from Japan I knew I wanted it and I was ready to pay. But surprise it’s suddenly available to the rest of the world today for free, and it’s not even update monday! So if you have a DSi go grab Flipnote Studio, because it’s awesome and with a robust online component to boot. Plus since it’s free it’s pretty much a standard feature to the DSi platform now just like the Opera Browser.

Want to see some things made with Flipnote? All the animations can be uploaded to the website for viewing on the PC or DS at www.Flipnote.Hatena.com

Nintendo E3 2009

Screen grabs from gameusagi.com

Good news. The show was better than last years show which was possibly the most unexciting show to date. While this years show was better for sure, it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, partially because some of the good titles shown aren’t news. That said, there are a couple new announcements that are worth noting for sure.

In order of personally most exciting…

The best new item for sure is one Nintendo held off on till the very last minute. A new Metroid game called Metroid Other M. It appears to be what I’ve been wanting ever since the N64 made it possible, a 2D/3D hybrid Metroid game that focuses on the early story of Samus Aran. The game is being co-developed by Team Ninja. When someone gets a trailer up for it I’ll be sure to slap it up here at the top. (UPDATE: Video available inside. Better resolution than the last one. ) Also Gameusagi.com has quality screen grabs from the trailer. Check em out!

There was also a great showing for the first 3D Mario game sequel on the same platform as its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Believe it or not I actually think this one looks better than the first one. The planets and level design look like they’re still crazy like in the first Galaxy and if anything they look a little more retro. The use of Yoshis as ride-able power-ups also makes a return.

Again on Wii there was another Mario game that looks like it could be pretty good. A 2D, sidescrolling, single/multiplayer simultaneous, Mario game! It actually reminds me of Zelda Four Swords in a way. Like Four Swords, the game is based around the idea of competition and co-operation. Looks interesting.

GoldenSun for DS. Not much was shown for it other than a trailer. But it’s a 3D GoldenSun basically.

There’s a couple more things actually. But they’re more details on things we already knew about like Wii Sports Resort, Red Steel 2, Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers, Resident Evil (I forget the subtitle!), Mario Vs Donkey Kong, and Sin and Punishment 2. Not bad. The fact that the new Metroid is there and looks promising is enough to make up for listening to sales numbers for 30 minutes.

And just because the main presentation is over doesn’t mean there aren’t more announcement coming. It’s happened before.

The Punch-Out!! Website is Awesome

The new Punch-Out!! for Wii is coming down the line and will be available in just 10 days. Meanwhile you can check out the snazzy, and quite frankly awesome, website for the game. My god, is that coach telling me to join Club Nintendo? Win.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! has remained one of my favorite titles over the years, and I like that they’ve brought back a lot of the over the top, stereotypical characters (sans Mike Tyson of course). They even have Piston Honda! Although they’ve modified his name a little so it’s now Piston HondO. Von Kaiser from Germany, Glass Joe from France. Awesome.

I haven’t played the new Punch-Out!! yet of course, but it’s looking great (Hey Nintendo, send me a copy please). It’s a good sign when a Wii game has controls for both motion controls (including balance board if you have one) and NES-Style buttons.

Color me excited.

Red Steel 2 Trailer Shows Promise

Remember Red Steel? Yeah, it was the first Wii game ever shown actually. It also had some major issues. It was a game that was just on the edge of being something great. However pressure to be a launch title pushed the game out too fast and all that potential never paid off, although we did get some hilarious bugs. It also didn’t help that the Wii remote wasn’t technically capable of what everyone expected. However with Motion Plus arriving soon, all those fantasies of sword duels become possible.

So not too much is shown in the Red Steel 2 trailer, but it’s again showing promise. Only this time the game has a longer development period and the hardware is there to make Red Steel what it was supposed to be in the first place. I occasionally bring up Red Steel 2, mentioning that Ubisoft really has something great potential in this title, BUT THEY HAVE TO TAKE THEIR TIME. We… Shall… See… I hope it exceeds my expectations.
