Latest Metroid: Other M gameplay trailer explains how the hell you play it

I’m a big fan of the Metroid series. Super Metroid is quite possibly my favorite game of all time. Metroid: Other M has of course been on my radar since it was announced and there’s been two trailers for the “Team Ninja x Nintendo” game. There’s always been a little problem though. Every time I see it, I can’t figure out what type of game it’s supposed to be. Well today that mystery is resolved with the latest ‘gameplay’ trailer!

Nintendo Download 23 - 27

I could on about all the games that came out over the last … month… like You Me and the Cubes, Final Fantasy, ARKANOID Plus, and other fine (and not so fine) titles. But all you need to know is that Altered Beast was released… again? That’s right Altered Beast is so awesome they released it twice.

Seriously though there are some sweet titles released recently, check out the list inside.

DSi Mario Calculator Easter Egg

So when it came out I downloaded the Mario Calculator for DSi. I know, it’s just a calculator and it costs $2, but you know what? I did it anyway because the draw of crispy 8-bit visuals is just too much for me (it does unit conversions as well you know!). But anway, I was calculating the number of cats one would have to jump over in order to blow your mind when all of the sudden…

Really I should have thought of this earlier since it’s so similar to another sort of easter egg from the Super Mario Bros on the NES.

This also works for the Animal Crossing version of the calculator (with a different result). I’m asking a friend to take a video of that one.
The instructions on how to do this are inside if you can’t figure it out from the video.

Nintendo E3 2009

Screen grabs from gameusagi.com

Good news. The show was better than last years show which was possibly the most unexciting show to date. While this years show was better for sure, it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, partially because some of the good titles shown aren’t news. That said, there are a couple new announcements that are worth noting for sure.

In order of personally most exciting…

The best new item for sure is one Nintendo held off on till the very last minute. A new Metroid game called Metroid Other M. It appears to be what I’ve been wanting ever since the N64 made it possible, a 2D/3D hybrid Metroid game that focuses on the early story of Samus Aran. The game is being co-developed by Team Ninja. When someone gets a trailer up for it I’ll be sure to slap it up here at the top. (UPDATE: Video available inside. Better resolution than the last one. ) Also Gameusagi.com has quality screen grabs from the trailer. Check em out!

There was also a great showing for the first 3D Mario game sequel on the same platform as its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Believe it or not I actually think this one looks better than the first one. The planets and level design look like they’re still crazy like in the first Galaxy and if anything they look a little more retro. The use of Yoshis as ride-able power-ups also makes a return.

Again on Wii there was another Mario game that looks like it could be pretty good. A 2D, sidescrolling, single/multiplayer simultaneous, Mario game! It actually reminds me of Zelda Four Swords in a way. Like Four Swords, the game is based around the idea of competition and co-operation. Looks interesting.

GoldenSun for DS. Not much was shown for it other than a trailer. But it’s a 3D GoldenSun basically.

There’s a couple more things actually. But they’re more details on things we already knew about like Wii Sports Resort, Red Steel 2, Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers, Resident Evil (I forget the subtitle!), Mario Vs Donkey Kong, and Sin and Punishment 2. Not bad. The fact that the new Metroid is there and looks promising is enough to make up for listening to sales numbers for 30 minutes.

And just because the main presentation is over doesn’t mean there aren’t more announcement coming. It’s happened before.

Team Fortress 2 / Smash Bros 64 Mash up ROCKS

O.O I am in shock. This is just pure awesome ok? That is all.

Red Steel 2 Trailer Shows Promise

Remember Red Steel? Yeah, it was the first Wii game ever shown actually. It also had some major issues. It was a game that was just on the edge of being something great. However pressure to be a launch title pushed the game out too fast and all that potential never paid off, although we did get some hilarious bugs. It also didn’t help that the Wii remote wasn’t technically capable of what everyone expected. However with Motion Plus arriving soon, all those fantasies of sword duels become possible.

So not too much is shown in the Red Steel 2 trailer, but it’s again showing promise. Only this time the game has a longer development period and the hardware is there to make Red Steel what it was supposed to be in the first place. I occasionally bring up Red Steel 2, mentioning that Ubisoft really has something great potential in this title, BUT THEY HAVE TO TAKE THEIR TIME. We… Shall… See… I hope it exceeds my expectations.
